The Glenglassaugh Distillery stands at the east end of Sandend bay approximately two miles to the west of Portsoy. It was here on the banks of the Glassaugh burn and in an area known to have been previously favoured by illicit distillers that local entrepreneur and businessman James Moir built the distillery in 1875. In 2007 a group of investors, who were also whisky enthusiasts, were looking for a whisky distillery with heritage and one that produced top quality single malt scotch whisky. Their trail led them to Glenglassaugh and soon after a deal was done to purchase the distillery. On the 29th February 2008 the keys were officially handed over to the newly formed “Glenglassaugh Distillery Company Limited” and a new chapter for this illustrious distillery began. In 2013, the BenRiach Distillery Company took over Glenglassaugh distillery with the intention to bring this iconic distillery fully back to life by giving it the investment, commitment and care it deserves. In only three years they managed to spark the interests of one of the worlds largest spirit producers Brown Forman who purchased the distillery in 2016.
The Glenglassaugh Distillery has been rediscovered and it’s core range has been given a fresh new look and taste. Master Blender Rachel Barrie has created this single malt whisky by using richly peated barley. After extracting the wonderful smokey elements from the barley and creating a exciting oil spirit it is then matured in a combination of barrels formerly used to hold Bourbon, Port and Sherry.
Portsoy is a richly peated single malt, named after the coastal distillery’s neighbouring harbour village.
