Laphroaig is Gaelic for ‘the beautiful hollow by the broad bay’. Opened in 1815 this distillery has a wonderful history and produces exceptionally memorable whisky. Positioned in a bay sheltered by rocky islands the distillery has the warm seas of the Gulf Stream nearby to help in maturation process. The water comes from Kilbride Dam a natural water source on Islay. In making Laphroaig, malted barley is dried over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, found only on Islay, gives Laphroaig its particularly rich flavour. American bourbon casks are used to mature this whisky and they produce a unique 10, 18 and 25 year old range of single malts.

Interesting fact about Laphroaig is that during prohibition it was allowed to be imported into America because customer’s thought it had medicinal purposes.

This bottling is part of their range that highlights complex maturation, using a quartet of different oak types to build its flavour profile. The “Four Oak” in its name refers to its unique maturation process in four different types of oak casks. Ex-Bourbon barrels: Provide classic vanilla, caramel, and sweet notes, Quarter Casks: Smaller casks that increase wood-to-spirit contact, intensifying maturation and adding creaminess and spice. New (Virgin) American Oak barrels: Impart robust vanilla, char, and deeper oak spices. European Oak barrels: Contribute notes of dried fruit, nuts, and additional spice. This combination aims to create a layered and complex flavour profile that balances Laphroaig’s peat with diverse oak influences. Bottled at 40% alc/vol, making it an approachable Laphroaig expression.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: Expect classic Laphroaig peat smoke, often described as bonfire embers and earthy phenols, gracefully intertwined with sweet vanilla, toasted marshmallow, and a hint of dark chocolate. Notes of ripe orchard fruits and a subtle nuttiness from the varied oaks also emerge.

Palate: Medium-bodied and smooth, with a pleasing oiliness. The peat smoke is present but balanced by a delightful sweetness. Flavours of creamy vanilla, honeyed malt, and rich toffee lead, followed by a gentle oak spice (cinnamon, nutmeg) and hints of dried fruit. The new oak contributes a robust, slightly charred note, while the Quarter Casks add a subtle peppery zest.

Finish: Medium to long, with the smoky peat lingering alongside a comforting sweetness and a dry, spicy oak character. A subtle brininess might also persist.
