Description
Port Charlotte SC:01 2012 Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 55.2% Age: 9 Years Old Country: Scotland
Built in 1881 when puffer-supplied coal was available as an alternative fuel to local peat, it is likely that Bruichladdich was specifically designed to produce the purest unpeated spirit possible. The great Alfred Barnard supports this view with a tantalising clue – the Laddie is the only distillery on Islay that he does not describe as drying its malt using peat in his fascinating exploration of the island’s distilleries in 1885. Falling on hard times with whisky demand low and plenty of surplus then owners Invergorden shut the distillery down in 1995. Re-opening again in 2001 it was sold to Remy Cointreau in 2012 which started to invest heavily to refurbish the distillery. An onsite maltings is currently being built at the distillery to allow for a 100% Islay grown, malted, distilled and matured spirit.
The Bruichladdich Port Charlotte SC:01 2012 is a 9 year old heavily peated single malt (55.2% alc/vol), made using 100% Islay grown barley malted to 40 ppm and matured first in sherry butts and American whiskey barrels before being finished in French Sauternes wine casks. On the nose you’ll find stone fruits, honeyed melon, vanilla fudge and floral perfume; the palate brings sweet fruit, oak and leather with a smoky backbone; the finish lingers with peat, earth, and citrus. No colouring, no chill filtration — just bold, complex Islay character.
Our Tasting Notes

Palate: Ripe garden fruit; sweet vanilla and caramel; earthy leather and boot polish; oak influence; smoke that is present but well integrated; lemon citrus notes
Finish: Long lingering smoke and earthy peat; marine notes or slight salinity; citrus tang; sweetness transitions slowly into bitterness (bitter chocolate or oak) balanced by residual fruit and smoke.
