The Speyside (GL) 16 Year Old Exceptional Cask 100 Proof Edition #7 is a highly regarded single malt Scotch whisky from independent bottler Signatory Vintage. This bottling is part of a special series that focuses on high strength whiskies from various distilleries, often with an element of mystery. The distillery is “undisclosed” on the label, but the “GL” in the name is a very strong hint. Whisky enthusiasts and retailers widely agree that “Speyside (GL)” refers to The Glenlivet distillery. Matured entirely in first-fill Oloroso sherry hogsheads for 16 years. These active casks impart a rich, intense sherry character to the whisky. This is Edition #7 of the “Exceptional Cask 100 Proof” series, a collection known for its robust character and sherry influence. Bottled at a powerful 57.1% ABV, which is a nod to the old British Imperial “100 Proof” system. It is non-chill filtered and has natural colour, ensuring the full spectrum of flavours and aromas is preserved.
Our Tasting Notes
This whisky is a sherry-bomb, delivering a rich and complex flavor profile that showcases the power of the Oloroso casks.
Nose: The aroma is deeply sherried and intense, with an abundance of dark, ripe fruits like prunes, figs, dates, and sultanas. These fruity notes are layered with hints of toasted nuts, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate. Hints of old leather, molasses, and even a touch of furniture polish.
Palate: The mouthfeel is full bodied and oily. It opens with a burst of rich sweetness from the sherry, featuring flavours of syrupy fruits, black tea, and figs. This is followed by a layer of spice, including pepper, cloves, and a subtle dryness from the oak. Hints of tobacco, leather, and dark chocolate add to the complexity. Despite the high ABV, we would say this is very well balanced.
Finish: The finish is long, warming, and impressive. The sherried fruit and spice notes linger, eventually giving way to a gentle oaky dryness and a final touch of bitter chocolate and roasted nuts.
