The Lakes Distillery is situated in the Lake District National Park in Northern England. The distillery has not been talked about until recent World Whisky results were announced naming one of the whiskies produced here as ‘Best In The World’. It’s generally at this turning point after receiving such a momentous award that the distillery gets rather popular and everyone wants to start talking about The Lakes Distillery and drinking what it produces.
The Lakes Whiskymaker’s Reserve No. 5 is a highly regarded English single malt whisky. This expression is part of their acclaimed “Whiskymaker’s Reserve” series, which aims to define their signature sherry led house style through an artistic exploration of oak and blending. As the name suggests, this is the fifth installement in The Lakes’ Whiskymaker’s Reserve series. These releases document their journey towards perfecting their signature sherry-forward style. This expression is matured in a combination of ex-Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks, these contribute intense sweetness, dried fruit notes (raisins, figs), and a rich, dark character. Ex-Oloroso sherry casks, these typically impart nutty, savoury, and more dried fruit characteristics. Ex-Red wine casks, these add an extra layer of fruity complexity, often with notes of red berries and a slight tannic influence. These casks comprise both Spanish and American oak. It is bottled at a robust 52% Alcohol by Volume (ABV), indicating a good strength that allows the flavours to truly shine. It’s non-chill filtered, This ensures that the whisky retains its full natural flavour compounds and a rich mouthfeel.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Often described as a “sherry bomb” with a rich and heady aroma. Expect notes of sticky toffee pudding, treacle, golden syrup, cherry Bakewell, honey. Raisins, figs, prunes, dark cherries, candied papaya. Polished oak, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, sometimes a hint of pecan or walnut.
Palate: Thick, oily, and creamy in texture, with the flavours expanding on the nose. You’ll find rich Sherry Influence, more red fruits (deep berries), plum pudding, toasted brown sugar. Sticky toffee pudding, coffee cake, nutty baklava. Baking spices (cinnamon, clove, pepper), a gentle peppery tingle. Hints of espresso, dark chocolate, roasted pecan, candied orange peel.
Finish: Long, warming, and often drying with a pleasant lingering sweetness and spice. Notes of toasted brown sugar, cassia. Mahogany warmth, elegant creamy feel. A subtle peppery tingle and sometimes a hint of ginger.
Overall Impression: The Lakes Whiskymaker’s Reserve No. 5 is lauded for its rich, decadent, and well-integrated sherry-led profile. It’s often compared favourably to whiskies from more established sherry forward distilleries (like Macallan or GlenAllachie) but brings its own distinct English character. It’s considered a complex and satisfying whisky, particularly appealing to those who enjoy a full-bodied, sweet, and spicy dram with a strong sherry influence. It’s best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to unlock its full spectrum of flavours.
