Tomatin Cu Bocan Creation #2 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 46% Age: No Age Statement Country: Scotland
The Tomatin Distillery was established in 1897 and was better known as Tomatin Spey Distillery Co. Ltd. The distillery went bankrupt in 1906 but it was then reopened in 1909. It managed to produce whisky till 1986 before being bought over by a Japanese company Takara Shuzo and at this time it was renamed Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd. This distillery is a massive operation producing around 2 and a half million litres of spirit each year but it has the capacity to produce 5 million litres. Most of the whisky produced at Tomatin goes into blended whisky which consist of their own brands named Antiquary and Talisman. This distillery though wants to be know for its single malt whisky, and have stepped up their game in this area.
One week every year they have started to produce a lightly peated single malt and named it Cu Bocan after a mythical black beast thought to stalk the Highlanders of Scotland. We think this single malt whisky is a beast in its own right. After the success of the first Creation Tomatin have brought us Creation Number 2 and again using the lightly peated spirit of Cu Bocan. For this release the distillery have taken whisky from European virgin oak casks and Japanese Shochu casks – WHAT! We’ve never heard of that before, a very rare combination.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Big smoky aromas like an active kiln drying barley, ripe fruits of apples and apricots. Digestive biscuits and lemon sweeties.
Palate: Big citrus flavours combine with toasted sesame seeds, roasted nuts and dried thyme..
Finish: A little showing of smoke gives way to a herbal and floral ending.
