The Sassenach Blended Scotch Whisky is the brainchild of actor Sam Heughan (best known for his role as Jamie Fraser in “Outlander”). The “Spirit of Home” tagline perfectly encapsulates its inspiration – a celebration of Scotland and the comfort of returning to one’s roots. It aims to offer a refined and approachable blended Scotch that appeals to a wide audience.

The spirit is distilled at various undisclosed distilleries across Scotland and then carefully blended and bottled by a third-party blender/bottler to Heughan’s specifications, using their expertise and access to casks. The brand’s philosophy revolves around authenticity, quality, and the celebration of Scottish heritage. Heughan aimed to create a whisky that was both approachable for newcomers and appreciated by connoisseurs, reflecting the natural beauty and spirit of Scotland.

Aged in a combination of first-fill American oak (ex-Bourbon) and ex-Sherry casks. This dual maturation provides a balance of vanilla, fruit, and subtle spice notes. Bottled at 46% alc/vol, a robust strength that allows its complex flavours to shine through. It is non-chill filtered and has natural colour, reflecting a commitment to quality and preserving its authentic character. The Sassenach has quickly gained significant recognition, winning prestigious awards including a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Our Tasting Notes

The Sassenach is praised for its smooth, approachable, yet complex profile, with a harmonious balance of sweet, fruity, and spicy notes.

Nose: Fresh and inviting with prominent notes of citrus (lemon zest, orange peel) and sweet apple. There are layers of vanilla, honey, and a delicate touch of cinnamon and nutmeg. Hints of toasted oak and dried fruit (apricot, peach), making it bright and appealing.

Palate: Smooth, rich, and full-bodied. Flavours of caramel, butterscotch, and warm toffee lead, beautifully integrated with crisp green apple, pear, and sweet peach. A gentle spice (black pepper, ginger) emerges, balanced by creamy vanilla and a malty sweetness. We’d described this whisky as having a comforting, luxurious texture.

Finish: Medium to long, clean, and satisfying. Lingering notes of sweet oak, baking spices, and a delicate fruitiness persist, with a pleasant warmth that fades gently.
