The Tomintoul Distillery is situated in the picturesque Speyside region of Scotland, within the Cairngorms National Park. It’s named after the nearby village of Tomintoul, which is the highest village in the Highlands. The distillery prides itself on producing “The Gentle Dram,” known for its exceptionally smooth and well-balanced single malt. It is a relatively modern distillery, established in 1964 by a consortium of whisky brokers. This mid-20th-century founding allowed for a design focused on efficiency and modern production methods, while still upholding traditional whisky-making principles. A key factor in Tomintoul’s “gentle” character is its water source: the exceptionally pure and soft water from the Ballantruan Spring, located high in the surrounding hills. This soft water contributes to the clean and mellow nature of the new make spirit. Since 2000, Tomintoul Distillery has been owned by Angus Dundee Distillers PLC, a Scottish independent distiller and blender. Under their stewardship, the distillery has focused on expanding its single malt offerings and enhancing its reputation
The Tomintoul Aged 15 Years 2006 Limited Edition Finished in Port Casks Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a special and highly regarded release from this Speyside distillery. This expression showcases the elegance of Tomintoul’s “gentle dram” when given a luxurious finishing period in Port pipes sourced from Portugal, adding layers of rich fruit and spice to its character. Distilled in 2006, it would have spent the majority of its maturation in traditional ex-Bourbon American oak casks before being transferred to the Port pipes for its final, transformative period. It’s typically bottled at 46% alc/vol, is non-chill filtered, and natural in colour.
This particular vintage, limited to 9,762 bottles, is a prime example of how judicious wood finishing can elevate a well made spirit, imparting a unique character while respecting the distillery’s core style.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: The aroma is rich and inviting, dominated by notes of maraschino cherries, dark berries (brambles, red cherry), and cooked fruits. These fruity notes are beautifully interwoven with sweeter elements like heather honey, creamy nougat, vanilla fudge, and hints of toasted brioche. You might also detect subtle spices like cinnamon and cedar, with a touch of flaked chocolate.
Palate: The palate is lusciously sweet and full-bodied, offering layers of cherry liqueur chocolates, rhubarb crumble, and sultanas. Rich baking spices such as ginger, cinnamon, and clove provide warmth and complexity. Notes of crème brûlée, mocha, and amoretti biscuit add to a delightful dessert-like quality. The initial sweetness is well-balanced, preventing it from being cloying.
Finish: The finish is long, warming, and very satisfying. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, dried fruits (sultanas), and mocha slowly fade into a gentle glow of clove and cinnamon spice. A persistent sweetness and a hint of a nutty character can also be present.
This whisky is a testament to the magic of Port cask finishing, perfectly complementing Tomintoul’s inherently smooth spirit with a vibrant and decadent fruit-and-spice profile.
