Tullibardine Distillery is nestled in the village of Blackford, Perthshire, at the gateway to the Highlands of Scotland. It stands on the site of a historic brewery that dates back to 1488, which once supplied ale to King James IV, giving the site a deep history with alcohol production. The modern Tullibardine distillery was established in 1949. It has experienced periods of closure and ownership changes, eventually being acquired by the French wine and spirits group Terroir Distillers in 2011, who have invested significantly in its facilities and range of whiskies. Tullibardine is known for producing a light, floral, and fruity single malt whisky
Wm. Cadenhead’s is Scotland’s oldest independent bottler, founded in 1842 in Aberdeen by George Duncan, and soon after acquired by William Cadenhead. The company is now owned by J. & A. Mitchell and Co. of Campbeltown, sharing heritage with Springbank Distillery.
This 12 year old expression, part of their Original Collection, showcases a fascinating interplay between Tullibardine’s light, nutty spirit and the refined influence of a Palo Cortado Sherry Cask. Distilled in 2012, this bottling offers a sophisticated and distinctive flavour profile, developed over more than a decade of careful maturation, where the rare Palo Cortado sherry brings a unique balance of richness and crispness. This particular bottling was matured and finished in a Palo Cortado Sherry Cask. Palo Cortado is a very rare type of sherry, combining the richness of Oloroso with the crispness of Amontillado, imparting complex notes of roasted nuts, dried fruits, citrus oils, and a savoury depth to the whisky. Bottled at 46% alc/vol and it is non-chill filtered and has natural colour, adhering to Cadenhead’s philosophy of authentic presentation. Part of Cadenhead’s Original Collection, a selection of outstanding single malts chosen for their exceptional quality and diversity of flavour, particularly from unusual cask types.
Our Tasting Notes
This 12-year-old Tullibardine from Cadenhead’s offers a captivating and elegant profile, balancing its inherent maltiness with the unique, complex nuances of a Palo Cortado sherry cask.
Nose: Expect enticing aromas of chocolate orange, syrup, and liquorice. Notes of bright citrus and toasted nuts (like almond and hazelnut) are prominent, mingled with hints of dried fruits such as apricots and figs, suggesting the unique complexity of Palo Cortado.
Palate: Dark chocolate and Maraschino cherries lead, followed by an elegant blend of dried apricots and dried mango. It often has a velvety texture, with citrus orange oil and a subtle acidity that balances the richness, moving towards caramelised hazelnuts and a touch of woody spice.
Finish: Reveals notes of coffee, salted caramel truffles, and nutmeg, with a slightly chalky texture. The finish is often described as having a rich nuttiness and a pleasant drying quality, consistent with the unique sherry influence. This Original Collection bottling allows the spirit to speak for itself, offering a truly unique and sophisticated dram.
