Laura’s Whisky Notes 2017 Tasting #2
Signatory Vintage 1996 Fettercairn, 19 Years Old, Bourbon Cask Matured, ABV 46%
Where: Biff Tannins, U5/601 Sydney Road, Brunswick
Glass: Glencairn Glass
This distillery was built in 1824 in the green rolling hills of north east Scotland. The name Fettercairn is based on the phrase ‘foot of the mountain’.
This area of Scotland is never short of water due to its abundance of sleet, hail, snow and rain and the distillery relies on drawing water from the Cairngorm mountain range nearby.
The arch and the unicorn on the logo are two symbols that are heavily associated with Fettercairn. The unicorn (which is the national animal of Scotland) is said to stand for ‘purity’ and ‘strength’. The arch to symbolise the entrance to the town and was built to commemorate a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1861.
This is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland and it produces a fairly rare whisky which is appreciated by many whisky lovers worldwide.
This whisky is an excellent after dinner refreshment.
Tasting Notes……Neat
Nose: Vanilla fudge and Scottish tablet were the first things that jumped out the glass at me, with a little hint of fresh hay and honey.
Taste: Syrupy sweet and spicy-a tingle of fresh white peppercorns and a tingly mouthfeel of fresh lemon mints.
Finish: Cooling, smooth and round leaving a malty-minty tang at the back
…with water.
Nose: water opens the aromas into a soft vanilla and milk chocolate notes with hints of freshly cut grass.
Taste: much rounder and softer, reminds me of a cross between lemon meringue pie and mint lifesavers (Polo mints in Scotland)
Finish: Minty fresh with nuances of fresh seaside air. Long and cooling
…with ice.
Nose: Greener, leafy notes with honey creeping in in at the back
Taste: Round and oily with lemon myrtle and mint leaves dusted off with a little white pepper.
Finish: Refreshing and cooling with honey, malt and mint.
Over all Thoughts
Certainly the Glencairn glass is one of the most commonly used glasses when in imbibing whisky. I love them and they certainly work well in terms of holding in the flavours and aromas!
This whisky was fabulous…made even better as I was sitting out doors in a balmy 23 degrees climate. I felt it makes for a perfect summer dram!
