The Barton 1792 Distillery is Located in Bardstown, Kentucky, USA, often referred to as the “Bourbon Capital of the World.” The distillery’s historical roots trace back to 1879, though it now commemorates the year Kentucky became a state (1792).
The distillery was originally founded as the Tom Moore Distillery in 1879. It remarkably managed to operate throughout Prohibition (1920-1933) by producing “medicinal whiskey.” Over its long history, it has changed ownership several times, eventually being acquired by the Sazerac Company (owners of Buffalo Trace, Pappy Van Winkle, etc.) in 1993. It was then rebranded as Barton 1792 Distillery. Barton 1792 Distillery is known for its large-scale production while maintaining a commitment to traditional bourbon-making processes.
1792 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, often referred to as “Small Batch” in many markets (though the specific “Small Batch” designation usually refers to a variant, this ABV is common for their flagship), is a robust and flavourful bourbon that stands out for its high-rye mash bill. Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This designation means it’s made in Kentucky from at least 51% corn, aged for a minimum of two years in new, charred oak barrels, distilled to no more than 160 proof (80% ABV), and entered into the barrel at no more than 125 proof (62.5% ABV). It contains a higher percentage of rye in its mash bill compared to many traditional bourbons. While the exact percentage is a distillery secret, it’s notably “high rye,” contributing to its spicy character. Aged in new, charred American oak barrels within the warehouses of the historic Barton 1792 Distillery. Bottled at 46.85% alc/vol (93.7 Proof), a slightly higher proof point that allows its complex flavours to be well-expressed.
Our Tasting Notes
1792 Bourbon is characterised by its spicy rye notes balanced by sweet corn and oak influences.
Nose: Rich and inviting with prominent notes of caramel, vanilla, and sweet corn. The high rye content introduces hints of spicy pepper, mint, and a touch of fruit (like apple or cherry). A pleasing presence of toasted oak and brown sugar.
Palate: Full-bodied and bold. The sweetness of caramel and vanilla meets a significant burst of rye spice (black pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg). Notes of dark fruit, toasted oak, and a creamy texture round out the palate. It’s robust yet often surprisingly smooth for its proof.
Finish: Long, warming, and spicy. The rye spice lingers, accompanied by notes of sweet oak, charred wood, and a touch of leather or tobacco. A pleasant warmth remains.
This bourbon is praised for offering a great balance between classic bourbon sweetness and the distinctive kick of rye, making it a favourite among bourbon enthusiasts.
