Twenty Third Street Distillery is named for its location on the corner of Twenty Third Street & Renmark Avenue in Renmark, South Australia. Situated in the former home of known wine labels which include Hardy’s Wine, Berri Estate and Chateau Tanunda. The site closed in 2004 and was then reopened in 2016 as Twenty Third Street Distillery. They boast three South Australian built copper stills which hold approximately a 7,500 litre capacity.
The 23rd Street Hybrid Australian Single Malt Whisky is an interesting expression that embraces a “hybrid” approach to whisky making. While it’s labeled as a “single malt” on some platforms, its initial release was a blend of a 5-year-old Scotch whisky and a 2-year-old Bourbon whiskey, which were then blended and finished in Bourbon casks. More recent information from the distillery’s own website for their “Australian Whisky” (which appears to be their current single malt offering) indicates it’s crafted from premium Australian barley malts, distilled through their historic copper pot stills, and matured in ex-Bourbon American oak and some richly seasoned Tawny barrels. The warmth of the Riverland climate influences its maturation.
