Signatory Vintage are an independent bottler founded in 1988 by Andrew and Brian Symington. The name ‘Signatory’ was derived from the initial intention to find a person of suitable standing to sign the labels for bottles drawn from a single cask. The first cask bottled was a 1968 Glenlivet which quickly sold through long before any suitable signee could be found. Signatory currently bottle at four strengths: 43% The Vintage Collection, 46% Unchillfiltered (UCF), 57.1% 100 Proof Collection and Cask Strength Collection. To add proof of authenticity to their cask strength bottlings, Signatory always include the cask numbers, date of distillation, date of bottling and number of bottles produced.Signatory Vintage’s aim is to offer as wide a range of whiskies as possible, some of which are not even bottled by the proprietary distillery. This allows malt enthusiast to sample the huge variety of subtle differences which occur between casks.
The Craigellachie distillery was opened in 1891 by the Craigellachie Distillery Company Ltd and was mainly used for producing White Horse blended whisky. In 2004 they released their first single malt aged 14 years. The distillery is now currently owned by John Dewar and Sons and they collect the water for making whisky from a spring on Little Conval Hill. The distillery also uses worm tubs style condensers for their stills, this allows for the new make spirit to retain more of a sulphurous and meaty character. With this malt whisky you can expect perfume, sweetness and spice with a hint of mint and freshly cut lawn.
This particular expression, distilled in 2009 and matured for 16 years, boasts a truly intriguing twist: it received a 1st Fill Madeira Hogshead Finish. This finishing period in a cask that previously held rich, fortified Madeira wine will undoubtedly add fascinating layers of sweetness, spice, and fruit to Craigellachie’s distinctive spirit. Bottled as part of Signatory’s acclaimed Cask Strength Collection, it comes in at a powerful 55.7% alc/vol. As always with Signatory, it’s presented without chill-filtration and with natural colour, ensuring an authentic and full-bodied tasting experience that highlights the influence of that special Madeira cask. As a single-cask release, this Craigellachie 16 Year Old is a limited and highly sought-after bottling that will appeal to enthusiasts and collectors looking for a powerful and characterful Speyside dram. Be sure to secure your allocation of this exceptional whisky soon!
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Expect a complex interplay of Craigellachie’s characteristic green apples and toasted nuts, now beautifully interwoven with rich notes of dried fruits, candied peel, and a hint of treacle or brown sugar from the Madeira influence.
Palate: Rich and chewy, the Madeira finish shines through with waves of sweet figs, dark honey, spiced marmalade, and perhaps a touch of grape or nutty complexity. This is beautifully balanced by Craigellachie’s underlying malty, slightly savoury character and a warming peppery kick.
Finish: Long, warming, and distinctly rich, leaving lingering notes of dried dark fruits, sweet spices, and a satisfying oaky warmth.
