The Glen Spey Distillery is located in Rothes, Moray, in the heart of Scotland’s Speyside region. It was founded in 1878 by James Stuart & Co. as the “Mill of Rothes” and originally operated from an oatmeal mill. In 1887, it was acquired by the London-based gin producer W&A Gilbey and renamed Glen Spey. The distillery has a history of supplying spirit primarily for blended whiskies, most notably J&B. Glen Spey is known for its light, delicate spirit, achieved partly through the use of “purifiers” on its spirit stills, which increase reflux during distillation. While official bottlings from Glen Spey are rare, independent bottlers like Signatory Vintage often showcase its character.
This particular release, the Glen Spey 2015 Aged 9 Years Single Malt Scotch Whisky – 100 Proof Collection By Signatory Vintage edition #37 (700ml), offers a unique opportunity to taste Glen Spey as a single malt. Distilled in 2015 and bottled in 2025, it spent its entire maturation period in 1st fill Oloroso sherry butts. Being part of Signatory’s “100 Proof Collection,” it’s bottled at a robust 57.1% ABV (which equates to 100 UK Imperial Proof), un-chill-filtered, and with no added colour, ensuring a full-flavored and authentic experience.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Ripe red berries, cinnamon-dusted apples, and toasted nuts. Also notes of fresh orchard fruit, toffee, and dried sultanas with a subtle, nutty hint of sherry oak.
Palate: Stewed plums, dark chocolate, and nutmeg spice. This is balanced by Glen Spey’s characteristic bright fruitiness, caramelised apple, and gentle, malty sweetness.
Finish: Warm and lingering, with hints of oak, dried fruit, and a touch of citrus zest. Mellow oak and lingering sherry fruit.
Signatory Vintage, founded in 1988 by brothers Andrew and Brian Symington, stands as one of Scotland’s most respected and prominent independent bottlers. Their philosophy is rooted in offering whisky enthusiasts a broad and diverse range of unique expressions, often sourcing casks from distilleries whose whiskies are not commonly seen as official single malts. Signatory is dedicated to bottling whiskies at natural cask strength or other robust proofs, such as their renowned 100 Proof Collection. They always ensure their whiskies are non-chill filtered and retain their natural colour. To underscore their commitment to authenticity and transparency, they provide meticulous details for each bottling, including cask numbers, distillation and bottling dates, and the precise number of bottles produced from each cask, allowing connoisseurs to delve into the subtle nuances that exist between individual casks.
