The Whisky
Witness the sheer volcanic power of Speyside with the GlenAllachie 15 Year Old 2009 (Signatory Vintage Symington’s Choice #900863). This 700ml single malt is the sister cask to #900864, hand selected by Andrew Symington for its extraordinary depth. Distilled on November 17, 2009, and bottled on May 27, 2025, it has been fully matured for 15 years in a single First Fill Oloroso Sherry Butt.
While its sibling is already a powerhouse, Cask #900863 reaches an even more staggering natural strength of 66.2% ABV. This is “extreme” whisky—an unapologetic, high octane sherry bomb that showcases the absolute limit of flavour concentration. With a limited outturn of only 561 bottles, it is a dark, viscous, and monumental dram that captures the heavy, honeyed GlenAllachie spirit in its most unfiltered and explosive state.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Lush, seductive, and immensely deep. You are greeted by an intense wave of cherry liqueur and dark chocolate, followed by a dense layer of raisins, figs, and candied fruit. As it opens, the first fill Oloroso reveals sophisticated notes of cocoa powder and soft winter spices, wrapped in the scent of honeyed oak and a hint of warm leather.
Palate: The arrival is a “flavour explosion”—bold, rich, and mouth-coating. It delivers a primary burst of dark sherry sweetness and forest fruits, which quickly evolves into a complex mid-palate of bitter chocolate, ginger, and cloves. Despite the eye watering 66.2% ABV, the palate maintains an impressive balance, layering toasted hazelnuts and dark molasses over the distillery’s signature heather honey core.
Finish: Eternal, warming, and deeply resonant. The finish lingers with a final flourish of mocha and stewed plums, finally tapering off with a clean, spicy trail of seasoned oak and persistent dark fruit richness.
The Distillery
GlenAllachie, nestled at the foot of Ben Rinnes, was founded in 1967. A unique factual detail: The distillery utilizes unusually horizontal condensers, which result in a high level of copper contact and a particularly “clean” but “heavy” spirit. Since the takeover by Billy Walker in 2017, GlenAllachie has become the global benchmark for wood management. This Symington’s Choice #900863 is a rare opportunity to taste the distillery’s output without any “tinkering” or finishing—just 15 years of raw interaction between a first fill Oloroso butt and one of Speyside’s most robust distillates.
Overall Review
The GlenAllachie 15 Year Old 2009 Signatory Symington’s Choice #900863 is globally reviewed as a “sherry lover’s ultimate dream,” praised for its monolithic intensity and surprisingly elegant balance at such a high proof. Critics have lauded its “complex, dark-fruit tapestry and incredible mouthfeel,” marking it as a mandatory purchase for serious collectors who want a “once-in-a-generation” Cask Strength experience.
