The Whisky
Elevate your island exploration with the Jura 16 Year Old 2009 (Signatory Vintage Cask Strength Collection #15). This 700ml single malt is a far more rugged and authentic representation of the island’s spirit than the standard distillery bottlings. Distilled in 2009 and matured for 16 years, this expression was finished in a 1st-Fill Oloroso Sherry Butt.
Presented at a natural cask strength of 54.2% ABV, this bottling captures the specific “oily” DNA of Jura at a perfect stage of maturity. The 1st-fill Oloroso finish provides a bold, decadent top layer of Spanish oak, infusing the spirit with rich autumnal colours and deep, oxidised fruit notes that perfectly complement Jura’s underlying maritime character. Yielding only 676 bottles, this is a limited, high definition look at how well Jura’s spirit can carry heavy sherry influence.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich, atmospheric, and beautifully balanced. You are greeted by a fragrant burst of singed raisins and sea spray, followed by a delicate layer of toasted pine nuts and baked apples. As it breathes, the 1st fill Oloroso influence reveals sophisticated, herbal notes and burnt caramel, reminiscent of a sea breeze blowing over a coastal forest.
Palate: The arrival is thick and “oily,” delivering a classic “salty and sweet” profile. It coats the palate with treacle toffee and smoked dates, which quickly evolve into a mid-palate of liquorice root and nutmeg. The 16 years of age provide a complex structure where the savoury, maritime dryness acts as a perfect counterpoint to the intense sherry fruitiness and malty sweetness.
Finish: Long, warming, and remarkably grounded. The finish lingers with a final flourish of charred oak and dark cocoa, finally tapering off with a clean trail of maritime salt and persistent wood spice.
The Distillery
Jura, founded in 1810, is the only distillery on an island that is home to over 5,000 deer and only 200 people. A unique factual detail: The distillery’s stills are among the tallest in Scotland, standing at nearly 8 meters. Originally designed to produce a very light Highland style spirit, they were modified in the 1960s to create a more robust, oily character. Independent releases like this Signatory Cask #15 are highly prized because they present the Jura spirit in its “raw” form, often highlighting a subtle, background peatiness and “saltiness” that is frequently lost in larger-scale commercial vatting.
Overall Review
The Jura 16 Year Old 2009 Signatory Cask Strength #15 is globally reviewed as a “sophisticated islander,” praised for its textural elegance and bold sherry integration. Critics have lauded its “harmonious balance of coastal salt and Oloroso richness,” marking it as a mandatory purchase for those who want to see the true potential of Jura when bottled at high strength and significant age.
