The Signatory Vintage Port Dundas 2008 Aged 14 Years Single Grain Scotch Whisky is a unique and intriguing release that showcases the often overlooked qualities of single grain whisky. Port Dundas, a Lowland distillery that closed in 2011, was once a major producer of grain whisky, primarily used for blends. This independently bottled expression, however, allows whisky enthusiasts to appreciate the distillery’s character in its single grain form.
Distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2023, this whisky matured for 14 years in a pair of refill Oloroso sherry butts. The use of sherry casks for a single grain whisky is relatively uncommon, as grain whisky is typically matured in ex-bourbon barrels. The sherry casks impart a distinctive richness and complexity to the whisky, adding notes of dried fruits, spices, and nuts.
Signatory Vintage, an independent bottler known for its diverse selection of whiskies and its dedication to preserving the character of each cask, bottled this Port Dundas at 46% alc/vol. This strength makes it an approachable and easy-drinking whisky while still allowing the flavours to shine through. As with all Signatory Vintage releases, it’s non-chill filtered and has no added colour, ensuring a pure and authentic taste experience.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: The nose is soft and inviting, with gentle waves of creamy grain notes. Toasted coconut and caramelised biscuits add a touch of sweetness and complexity.
Palate: The palate is smooth and well rounded, with flavours of fluffy pancakes drizzled with maple syrup. Barley sugar sweets and crushed almonds provide a delicate sweetness, while polished oak adds a subtle spice.
Finish: The finish is long and warming, with gingery spice joining the lingering sweetness of creamy vanilla and buttery oats. A hint of summer berries adds a refreshing touch.
The Signatory Vintage Port Dundas 2008 14 Year Old Single Grain Scotch Whisky is a whisky that challenges expectations and offers a delightful exploration of flavours. It’s a testament to the quality of Port Dundas’ spirit and the expertise of Signatory Vintage’s cask selection. If you’re looking for a unique and flavourful whisky that showcases the often overlooked potential of single grain, this expression is an excellent choice.
