The Whisky
Elevate your Speyside experience with the Miltonduff 14 Year Old 2011 (Signatory Vintage 100 Proof Edition #54). This 700ml single malt is a standout entry in Signatory’s acclaimed “100 Proof” series, designed to offer high strength, high clarity whiskies that allow the distillery’s true character to shine. Distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2025, this expression is a “Double Oloroso” maturation, having been aged exclusively in 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry Hogsheads and 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry Butts.
Presented at a powerful 57.1% ABV, Edition #54 captures Miltonduff in a state of “elegant intensity.” By utilising only first-fill European oak, Signatory has ensured a maximum extraction of flavour, layering Miltonduff’s structural floral power with a thick, syrupy sherry influence. It is a robust, full bodied dram that showcases how a decade and a half in premium, fresh sherry wood can transform a delicate spirit into a rich, nutty masterpiece.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Deeply aromatic and classically Speyside. You are greeted by a lush wave of sticky toffee and roasted almonds, followed by a bright, floral lift of heather honey and dried apricots. As it breathes, the 1st-fill Oloroso influence reveals festive notes of dark chocolate orange and a hint of warm leather, creating a nose that feels both sophisticated and indulgent.
Palate: The arrival is bold and “chewy,” with the 57.1% ABV providing an immediate, spicy warmth. It delivers a primary burst of rich fruitcake and golden syrup, which quickly evolves into a mid-palate of hazelnut praline and stewed plums. The texture is remarkably oily, allowing the spirit’s natural malted barley and vanilla notes to intermingle perfectly with the dry oak and cinnamon spices from the fresh sherry wood.
Finish: Long, satisfying, and elegantly drying. The finish lingers with a final flourish of dark cocoa and spiced raisins, finally tapering off with a clean, warming trail of nutty oak and a hint of ginger.
The Distillery
Miltonduff, located in the Glen of Pluscarden near Elgin, was founded in 1824 on the site of an old meal mill. A unique factual detail: The distillery was once famous for producing a “triple distilled” spirit called Mosstowie using Lomond stills in the 1960s and 70s. While Mosstowie is now a ghost whisky, the core Miltonduff spirit remains prized for its versatile, “oily” floral profile. Because the vast majority of its production is destined for major blends like Ballantine’s, official bottlings are exceptionally rare, making this Signatory 100 Proof release a vital opportunity for enthusiasts to experience the distillery’s robust and structural “old school” character.
Overall Review
The Miltonduff 14 Year Old 100 Proof Edition #54 is globally reviewed as a “sophisticated powerhouse,” praised for its balance of high proof heat and heavy sherry driven elegance. Critics have lauded its “nutty, floral complexity,” marking it as a mandatory purchase for collectors of the 100 Proof series and those seeking a classic Speyside profile amplified to “high-definition” cask strength.
