This is a truly exceptional and remarkably rich independent bottling from Signatory Vintage, showcasing “The Beast of Dufftown” with an intense sherry influence. Distilled in 2014 and matured for a decade, this 10-year-old single malt is a vibrant testament to Mortlach’s complex spirit. What makes this particular release so captivating is its full maturation in 1st Fill Pedro Ximénez (PX) Hogsheads. PX sherry, known for its profound sweetness and dark fruit character, interacts powerfully with Mortlach’s robust spirit, creating a unique and indulgent profile. Bottled at 48.2% alc/vol as part of Signatory’s renowned Small Batch Edition (#15), this whisky is non-chill filtered and boasts its natural colour, ensuring an authentic and unadulterated tasting experience straight from the cask.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Expect an immediate and powerful embrace of rich, sweet dried fruits like figs, dates, and plump raisins, beautifully layered over a subtle hint of Mortlach’s signature savoury character. Notes of dark chocolate, treacle, and rich spiced orange peel are also prominent.
Palate: Delivers a full-bodied, unctuous, and incredibly chewy experience. A tidal wave of sticky toffee pudding, rich fruitcake, and dark berries washes over the tongue. The profound sweetness from the PX is perfectly balanced by the robust, almost umami, qualities of Mortlach, along with warming baking spices, leading into notes of dark roasted coffee beans and candied nuts.
Finish: Exceptionally long, warm, and profoundly satisfying. The rich, sweet dark fruits and lingering chocolate notes intertwine with a subtle dry oak and a persistent, complex spice, leaving a memorable impression of this powerful union.
Mortlach Distillery is situated in the historic town of Dufftown, at the very heart of the Speyside region of Scotland, often affectionately known as “The Whisky Capital of the World.” Founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Mortlach holds the distinction of being the first legal distillery established in Dufftown, thereby laying the foundation for the town’s prolific whisky-making heritage. For much of its history, the distillery’s highly prized spirit has been a fundamental component for many prestigious blended whiskies, most notably Johnnie Walker. Today, Mortlach continues its legacy under the ownership of Diageo, one of the world’s largest spirits companies.
Signatory Vintage is a highly respected and prominent independent bottler, established in 1988 by brothers Andrew and Brian Symington. The company’s name, ‘Signatory,’ was originally conceived from the idea of having a notable figure sign the labels for bottles drawn from unique single casks, although famously, their very first bottled cask, a 1968 Glenlivet, sold out long before any suitable signee could be found. Since its inception, Signatory has cultivated an impeccable reputation for its unwavering commitment to sourcing and bottling exceptional single malts and grains from distilleries across the length and breadth of Scotland. They consistently bottle their whiskies at various strengths, including their 43% Vintage Collection, 46% Unchillfiltered (UCF), 57.1% (100 Proof), and full Cask Strength.
