Old Pulteney Flotilla 2010 Vintage Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 46% Age: No Age Statement Country: Scotland
Founded in 1826 by James Henderson at the height of Wick’s celebrated herring boom, the Pulteney Distillery is one of the most northerly on the British mainland. At a time when road links to the town were yet to be established, the distillery was dependent on the sea for its supply of barley and for the shipping out of its malt whisky. Wick became known for the barrels of silver (herring) and gold (whisky) which left the port in vast numbers. The distillery itself has an absorbing history, with its unique stills defying convention to this day. The wash still, in particular, is a source of fascination to visitors due to the absence of a ‘swan neck’. Legend has it that when the still was delivered it was too tall for the still house and the manager simply decided to cut the top off! The Old Pulteney bottle now incorporates a bulbous neck to reflect the shape of the stills.
The Old Pulteney Flotilla 2010 Vintage is a single malt whisky distilled in 2010 and typically aged for 10 years, making it bottled around 2020 or 2021. It’s matured entirely in first-fill American oak ex-Bourbon casks and bottled at 46% alc/vol. The “Flotilla” name, meaning a small fleet of boats, is a nod to Old Pulteney’s deep connection to the sea. This vintage expression aims to showcase the quintessential Old Pulteney style with a focus on the vanilla and fruity notes imparted by active bourbon barrels, balanced by the distillery’s signature maritime influence.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Expect a delightful combination of vanilla sweetness, often leaning towards vanilla ice cream or creamy caramel, intertwined with bright, zesty lemon, green apples, and other orchard fruits (like pear). A subtle, yet distinct, maritime influence comes through as sea spray, brine, or a hint of salinity, sometimes even a touch of ‘fresh green oak’ or ‘singed toast.’ Some tasters have noted a faint earthy or even rubbery hint, which can be part of the complexity.
Palate: The texture is generally described as smooth, creamy, or oily, with a medium body. Flavours of vanilla, butterscotch, and honey lead the way, quickly followed by the fresh, tangy notes of lemon rind and green apple. There’s a building warmth of spices (ginger, cinnamon, pepper) and a continuation of the maritime saltiness. Some might detect liquorice or a subtle herbal quality. It’s often described as rich and well balanced.
Finish: The finish is typically long and warming, with lingering notes of salted caramel, peppery spices, and that characteristic sea air or briny tang. It can be drying, with a persistent freshness.
Overall, the Old Pulteney Flotilla 2010 is celebrated for its harmonious blend of bourbon cask sweetness and Old Pulteney’s unique coastal character, making it a very approachable yet complex dram.
