Description
Ardmore Triple Wood Peated Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)
Volume: 1000ml ABV: 46% Age: No Age Statement Country: Scotland
The Ardmore distillery was first built in 1899 by William Teacher and Sons and changed hands in 1976 when it was taken over by Allied Brewers which are now more commonly known as Allied Distillers. The current owners Fortune Brands Inc produce around 5,100,000 litres of malt whisky per year and this is a major contributor to Teacher’s Highland Cream which is very fitting as they were the original owners. The distillery is based in Kennethmont which is a beautiful village north west of Aberdeenshire south of Huntly in Scotland’s Highland region. Expect a zesty single malt whisky full of citrus fruits and a little peat smoke. A lingering mouth feel that just keeps on giving.
The Triple Wood expression was originally released for the travel retail (duty-free) market, which is why it often comes in a 1 litre bottle. The “Triple Wood” refers to its maturation process in three different types of casks, ex-Bourbon American oak barrels which impart vanilla, caramel, and sweet notes. Quarter Casks, smaller casks that offer a greater wood-to-liquid ratio, leading to faster maturation and intensified flavours. Puncheons, which are larger 500-litre casks, which contribute to the overall complexity and balance. As an Ardmore whisky, it carries its signature Highland peat smoke. This isn’t an overwhelming Islay style peat, but rather a more subtle, warming, and often biscuity smoke. Bottled at 46% Alcohol by Volume (ABV). The whisky has not been chilled filtered before bottling, which helps retain more of its natural oils and flavour compounds, contributing to a richer mouthfeel.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Often described as having biscuity cereal notes, honey, red berries, ginger, burnt sugar, cherries, and a gentle whiff of peat smoke. Some note a hint of cinnamon or banana.
Palate: The peat tends to develop more on the palate, often with a peppery quality. Expect flavors of light caramelized sugar, toasted barley, sweet vanilla custard, raisins, and robust vanilla. Some detect pink peppercorn and dried fruit (like candied orange peel).
Overall Impression: The Ardmore Triple Wood is an approachable peated single malt. It balances its Highland peat smoke with sweet, fruity, and vanilla notes from its triple wood maturation, making it a complex yet enjoyable dram for both those new to peated whiskies and seasoned enthusiasts looking for something a bit different from the Highlands. We recommend it to be enjoyed neat to fully appreciate its nuances.
