Ardnamurchan AD/ Sherry Cask Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 50% Age: No Age Statement Country: Scotland
Located on the most westerly point of the British mainland sits the Ardnamurchan Distillery. Probably one of the most sustainable distilleries in the United Kingdom if not the world, plenty of thought has been given to the environment before designing and developing this distillery. There’s a local hydro-electric generator that provides the cooling water and local forest wood chips that are used to heat the hot water for mashing. The draft left behind after the mash is used to feed local cattle and the pot ale is used for fertilising local fields. Owned and operated by Adelphi the distillery it boasts 2 stills and 7 wash backs. The owners of the distillery are also a very well know quality independent bottler.
A softly peated Ardnamurchan Highland single malt whisky matured in a combination of Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso Sherry Casks. There were twenty casks in total which consisted of fifteen hogsheads of unpeated Highland spirit and ten Sherry Butts of peated Highland spirit. A big , bold, complex single malt with no burn and no sulpur. It’s all about sherry and coastal notes with a soft well balanced integration of earthy peat smoke. Bottled at 50% Alc/Vol and with no add colour or chill filtration.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Instantly the first aroma is dark dried fruits, raisins and figs, dates and prune syrup from a can. White pepper and balsamic reduction glaze. Barrel char and quite earthy. There’s a maritime note to the nose as well which integrates with the faint peat smoke.
Palate: Raisins and figs, a generous helping of salty ocean spray and peaty earthiness. The alcohol is not hot but it is mount numbing, which is a good thing. Great balance and plenty of flavour.
Finish: Long with dark fruits and earthiness. Soft salted caramel notes and some menthol.
