The Whisky
This highly-anticipated bottling from Signatory Vintage’s 100 Proof Collection (Edition #41) captures the robust, characterful spirit of the Ben Nevis Distillery. Distilled in 2015 and aged for 9 years, this malt spent its entire maturation in active First Fill Oloroso ex-Sherry Butts. This full term sherry influence interacts perfectly with the distillery’s unique, often oily, meaty/waxy Highland style. Bottled at the traditional 100 Proof (57.1% alc/vol), this Ben Nevis is presented non-chill filtered and with natural colour, delivering a bold and decadent union of malt and dark sherry
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and complex, with immediate notes of dark treacle, dried sultanas, and spiced leather. Underlying the sherry richness is a subtle, desirable earthy minerality and sometimes a ‘meaty’ savouriness.
Palate: Full and creamy mouthfeel. Delivers a wave of burnt sugar, espresso, rich fig jam, and dark chocolate. The distinctive Ben Nevis waxy texture provides structure to the immense sherry sweetness.
Finish: Long, warming, and slightly gripping. Lingering flavours of cocoa powder, seasoned oak, and a pleasing hint of walnut and subtle spice.
The Independent Bottler
Signatory Vintage is one of Scotland’s most respected independent bottlers, celebrated for its unwavering commitment to quality and transparency. Established in 1988 by brothers Andrew and Brian Symington, Signatory Vintage quickly carved a niche by offering single cask, un-chillfiltered, and natural colour whiskies – practices that were far less common at the time but are now widely revered by connoisseurs. Their name, “Signatory,” stems from their original intention to have famous personalities sign the labels of their special bottlings, a unique concept that unfortunately proved impractical but left a lasting legacy in their brand name. Over the decades, Signatory Vintage has amassed an astonishing collection of casks from distilleries across Scotland, including many silent stills. This extensive inventory allows them to release an incredibly diverse range of whiskies, from youthful and vibrant expressions to incredibly rare and aged treasures. Each bottle is a testament to the individual character of the distillery and the unique journey of the liquid within its cask.
Signatory Vintage represents an unparalleled opportunity to explore the true essence of Scotch whisky. Their commitment to bottling at natural cask strength, un-chillfiltered, and without added colouring ensures that every drop delivers the purest and most authentic distillery character. When you choose a Signatory Vintage bottling, you’re not just buying a whisky; you’re acquiring a piece of liquid history, a unique expression that tells its own story from cask to glass. Discover the depth and diversity of Scotland’s finest spirits with Signatory Vintage.
The Distillery
Ben Nevis Distillery is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. The distillery is nestled at the foot of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, which has a summit elevation of 4’406 feet above sea level giving its malt a renowned name ‘the dew of Ben Nevis’ . This imposing mountain provides an impressive background to a traditional Scottish craft. The distillery was founded by ‘Long John’ Macdonald (no he was not a pirate) in 1825 and in 1848 in a cunning way of promotion presented a cask to Queen Victoria when she visited Fort William. They produce both malt and grain whiskies simultaneously due to installation in 1955 of a special still.
