The Glenmorangie Distillery is located just north of Tain, Ross-shire, in the Highland region of Scotland. It sits on the Dornoch Firth, an inlet of the North Sea. The distillery proudly refers to its whisky makers as the “Men of Tain,” a small team of skilled craftsmen who traditionally oversee every stage of the whisky-making process. Established in 1843 by William Matheson, Glenmorangie was originally a brewery before it obtained a whisky distilling license. One of Glenmorangie’s most prized assets is its exclusive water source: the Tarlogie Springs, situated in the Tarlogie Hills above the distillery. This spring water, which filters for a century through layers of limestone and sandstone, is exceptionally hard and mineral-rich. It’s often cited as a crucial element in Glenmorangie’s distinctive floral and fruity new-make spirit. To protect this vital resource, Glenmorangie even acquired the entire catchment area of the springs. Since 2004, Glenmorangie has been owned by Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH), the global luxury goods group. Under LVMH, Glenmorangie has significantly invested in its brand and production, maintaining its reputation for innovation and quality.
The Glenmorangie 18 Year Old The Infinita Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a highly esteemed expression in Glenmorangie’s core range, often considered a step up in complexity and richness from their renowned 10-year-old Original and 12-year-old finishes. It’s a testament to Glenmorangie’s mastery of wood management and extended maturation. This expression is renowned for its intricate balance of sweet, floral, and subtly dry notes. The “Infinita” name (previously “Extremely Rare”) hints at the endless layers of flavour and aroma to discover within. It’s typically matured for 15 years in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks, and then a significant portion of this whisky is transferred for a further three years of finishing in Oloroso sherry casks before being reunited with the original liquid for a final marrying period. This dual maturation results in a whisky of remarkable depth and harmony. It is bottled at 43% alc/vol, non-chill filtered, and natural in colour.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Luxuriously rich and inviting. You’ll find a complex interplay of sweet, dried fruits like apricot, fig, and sultanas, beautifully integrated with creamy vanilla, honey, and a hint of almond or marzipan. There’s often a delicate floral character (like jasmine or orange blossom) and a subtle suggestion of warm spices (nutmeg, cinnamon) or even a faint wisp of wood smoke or polished oak.
Palate: The palate is velvety smooth and full-bodied. It delivers a beautiful balance between honeyed sweetness, rich malt, and delicate floral notes. Layers of caramelized orange, juicy figs, and dates unfold, accompanied by the warmth of ginger, chocolate, and a subtle nutty dryness from the Oloroso sherry influence. The mouthfeel is often described as lush and creamy, making for a truly indulgent experience.
Finish: The finish is long, elegant, and enticing. It lingers with the sweetness of dried fruits and honey, complemented by a gentle dryness from the Oloroso nuttiness. Subtle notes of sandalwood, chocolate, and a whisper of spice can persist, leaving a refined and memorable impression.
The Glenmorangie 18 Year Old Infinita is considered a benchmark for balanced and complex Highland single malts, showcasing how extended maturation and careful wood finishing can create a whisky with immense depth and a seamless flavour profile
