This whisky is sourced from a distinguished distillery on the Orkney Islands, with the “(HP)” notation strongly suggesting it is Highland Park Distillery. Located near Kirkwall on Mainland Orkney, Highland Park is one of Scotland’s most northerly distilleries. Founded in 1798 by Magnus Eunson, an illicit distiller and butcher, it boasts a history deeply intertwined with the rugged Norse heritage of the islands. Highland Park is celebrated for its unique single malt, which is a harmonious blend of island characteristics, including subtle peat smoke, sweetness, and a distinctive floral and heather note.
This 14-year-old single malt, distilled in 2010 and part of Signatory’s 100 Proof Collection, showcases the iconic character of Orkney’s most famous distillery, strongly implied to be Highland Park due to the “(HP)” designation. Matured for no less than 14 years in a combination of 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry Butts & ex-Bourbon Hogsheads. Bottled at a robust 57.1% alc/vol (100 Proof). It is non-chill filtered and has natural colour.
Our Tasting Notes
This whisky offers a mature and complex interpretation of Orkney’s celebrated character, showcasing depth developed over 14 years.
Nose: Expect a harmonious blend of fragrant heather smoke, sweet honey, and vanilla. Notes of dried fruits like apricot and sultana might emerge, alongside subtle citrus peel and a hint of coastal brine.
Palate: Rich and smooth, with a full body that coats the mouth. The gentle peat smoke is beautifully integrated, mingling with creamy fudge, malted barley, and a distinct honey sweetness. Warming spices such as ginger, nutmeg, and black pepper add complexity, balanced by notes of toasted oak.
Finish: Long, lingering, and wonderfully balanced. The sweet smoke and honey persist, joined by a delicate spiciness and a subtle dryness that fades into a comforting warmth and a hint of salinity. This whisky offers a mature and complex interpretation of Orkney’s celebrated character, making it an excellent addition to any collection.
Located near Kirkwall on Mainland Orkney, Highland Park is one of Scotland’s most northerly distilleries. Highland Park is celebrated for its unique single malt, which is a harmonious blend of island characteristics, including subtle peat smoke, sweetness, and a distinctive floral and heather note. The distillery maintains its own traditional floor maltings, where barley is turned by hand and peated using local Orkney peat, which contains high levels of heather. This attention to detail and traditional methods, combined with maturation in a combination of ex-Bourbon and heavily sherry-seasoned oak casks, contributes to its rich, complex, and iconic flavour profile. Highland Park has a dedicated visitor centre and offers tours, sharing its rich history and unique production process.
