Talisker Surge Island Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 45.8% Age: No Age Statement Country: Scotland
Talisker distillery is an Island single malt Scotch whisky distillery based in Carbost, Scotland on the Isle of Skye. This Scottish West Coast distillery is operated by Diageo who also own distilleries such as Lagavulin, Cardhu, Cragganmore, Mortlach and many more. The distillery was founded in 1830 but rebuilt in 1880. The malted barley used in production comes from Muir of Ord and Talisker has an unusual feature, swan neck lye pipes. A loop in the pipes takes the vapour from the stills to the worm tubs so some of the alcohol already condenses before it reaches the cooler. It then runs back into the stills and is distilled again. Talisker now has an output of three and a half million litres of spirit per annum.
Talisker Surge is an ode to the raw, untamed power of the sea that surrounds the distillery on Skye. It aims to deliver an intense wave of flavour, true to Talisker’s “Made by the Sea” ethos. No Age Statement (NAS). This allows the blenders to select whiskies at their optimal maturity to achieve the desired flavour profile, often featuring younger, more vibrant spirits alongside older ones. Uniquely, Talisker Surge is matured exclusively in first-fill American Oak ex-Bourbon barrels. The use of highly active first-fill casks is key to its intensity, drawing out significant notes of vanilla, sweet oak, and robust spice, which complement Talisker’s peaty and maritime spirit. Bottled at a strong 45.8% alc/vol, a classic Talisker bottling strength that ensures the whisky’s bold character is fully expressed. It is surprisingly chill-filtered and may have added colouring (E150a) for consistency, as is common with many larger core range official bottlings. Initially launched as a travel retail exclusive, it has since been made available in wider markets due to its popularity.
Our Tasting Notes
Talisker Surge is designed to be an electric and powerful dram, delivering a direct hit of maritime smoke and sweetness.
Nose: Immediately met with a powerful and inviting aroma of Talisker’s signature maritime smoke, reminiscent of a distant bonfire on the shore. This is beautifully interwoven with notes of sweet orchard fruits (green apple, pear), fresh mint, and hints of toasted oak and vanilla from the active Bourbon casks. A clear brininess and sea spray note is also present.
Palate: Full-bodied, peppery, and incredibly vibrant. The initial explosion of sweet tropical fruits (pineapple, mango) and creamy vanilla quickly gives way to a rush of intense Talisker smoke and a powerful sea salt tang. Notes of dark chocolate, ginger, and black pepper build, creating a spicy warmth that balances the sweetness.
Finish: Long, warming, and truly captivating. The signature maritime smoke lingers, accompanied by a pleasant peppery kick and a beautiful balance of sweetness and a mineralic salinity. It leaves a lasting impression of the wild Skye coastline.
This whisky is an excellent choice for those who love Talisker’s peaty and coastal character and are looking for a more intense, sweet, and spicy expression driven by active American oak.
