The Whisky
Experience the “Gentle Dram” elevated to a rare level of grandeur with the Tomintoul 30 Year Old 1995 (Signatory Vintage Symington’s Choice #6). This 700ml single malt is a crown jewel in the Symington’s Choice series, showcasing a distillery typically known for its light, grassy profile in a transformative, high aged state. Distilled on May 1, 1995, and matured for exactly three decades, this spirit was drawn from a single First Fill Oloroso Sherry Butt.
Presented at a natural cask strength of 50.7% ABV, this is a limited release of only 565 bottles. While Tomintoul often sits quietly in the background of Speyside, 30 years in a vibrant first fill sherry butt has imbued the spirit with a monumental “Sherry Grandeur” that few get to experience. It remains non-chill filtered and natural in colour, possessing a deep, polished mahogany hue.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Opulent, elegant, and deeply nuanced. You are greeted by a fragrant burst of fig preserve, dark honey, and orange-peel marmalade, rising above a base of beeswax polished oak and walnut shells. As it breathes, the three decades of maturation reveal antique notes of old leather and pipe tobacco, with a delicate dusting of cocoa providing a rich, dry finish to the aroma.
Palate: The arrival is silky and “velvet-like,” coating the tongue with a complex, oily texture. It delivers primary waves of treacle toffee, malt loaf, and dried cherries, which quickly evolve into a mid-palate of clove spiked chocolate and roasted hazelnuts. The trademark Tomintoul “soft fruit” DNA is still detectable as a bright flash of candied citrus, providing a vital counterpoint to the heavy, oxidative sherry richness.
Finish: Long, warming, and remarkably elegantly dry. The finish lingers with a final flourish of sherry soaked fruitcake and gentle Rancio warmth, finally tapering off with a clean, sophisticated trail of vanilla malt sweetness and soft oak tannins.
The Distillery
Tomintoul, located in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, is the highest distillery in the Highlands. A unique factual detail: It was built in 1964 specifically to produce an exceptionally “pure” and “light” spirit to serve as a blending component for prestigious brands. Because of its remote location and high altitude, the spirit matures slowly and gracefully. This Symington’s Choice Cask #6 is a significant departure from its “Gentle Dram” reputation; it proves that when Tomintoul’s delicate spirit is matched with a powerful, first-fill sherry cask for 30 years, it can stand toe-to-toe with the legendary heavyweights of Speyside.
Overall Review
The Tomintoul 30 Year Old 1995 Signatory Symington’s Choice #6 is globally reviewed as an “exquisite union of fruit and wood,” praised for its incredible elegance. Critics have lauded its “sophisticated balance, where the sherry never overpowers the spirit,” marking it as a mandatory purchase for serious collectors and those who want to see the ultimate, long aged potential of one of Speyside’s more understated distilleries.
