The Whisky
This Blair Athol 2011 Aged 13 Years from Signatory Vintage’s Cask Strength Collection offers a rare glimpse into this historic Highland distillery. Established in 1798 in Pitlochry, Blair Athol is celebrated for its robust, nutty, and subtly spicy character, often a key component in blends like Bell’s. This particular single malt, distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2025, spent 13 years maturing in a first-fill ruby Port hogshead (Cask #6). Bottled at a natural cask strength of 57.7% alc/vol, un-chillfiltered, and with natural colour, it showcases Blair Athol’s core spirit beautifully interwoven with opulent red fruit and spice from the Port cask. A limited release for true connoisseurs.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Immediately vibrant and rich, with an abundance of red fruits: ripe raspberries, dark cherries, and red currants, alongside sweet plum jam. There’s a delightful underpinning of malted barley, toasted nuts (almonds), and a gentle spice, reminiscent of cinnamon and nutmeg. A subtle floral hint emerges with time, alongside a touch of earthy oak.
Palate: Full-bodied and wonderfully coating, the red fruit explosion continues, now with notes of blackberry compote and a touch of dark chocolate. The classic Blair Athol nuttiness and malty sweetness are present, beautifully complemented by the Port cask’s influence, bringing hints of dried cranberries and a peppery warmth. A satisfying interplay of sweet and dry spices.
Finish: Long and warming, with the fruity sweetness slowly fading to reveal drier oak tannins and lingering baking spices. Notes of dark fruit skin, a hint of cocoa, and a persistent, pleasant warmth from the cask strength leave a memorable impression.
The Independent Bottler
Signatory Vintage is one of Scotland’s most respected independent bottlers, celebrated for its unwavering commitment to quality and transparency. Established in 1988 by brothers Andrew and Brian Symington, Signatory Vintage quickly carved a niche by offering single cask, un-chillfiltered, and natural colour whiskies – practices that were far less common at the time but are now widely revered by connoisseurs. Their name, “Signatory,” stems from their original intention to have famous personalities sign the labels of their special bottlings, a unique concept that unfortunately proved impractical but left a lasting legacy in their brand name. Over the decades, Signatory Vintage has amassed an astonishing collection of casks from distilleries across Scotland, including many silent stills. This extensive inventory allows them to release an incredibly diverse range of whiskies, from youthful and vibrant expressions to incredibly rare and aged treasures. Each bottle is a testament to the individual character of the distillery and the unique journey of the liquid within its cask.
Signatory Vintage represents an unparalleled opportunity to explore the true essence of Scotch whisky. Their commitment to bottling at natural cask strength, un-chillfiltered, and without added colouring ensures that every drop delivers the purest and most authentic distillery character. When you choose a Signatory Vintage bottling, you’re not just buying a whisky; you’re acquiring a piece of liquid history, a unique expression that tells its own story from cask to glass.
