Glen Scotia Aged 10 Years Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 40% Age: 10 Years Old Country: Scotland
The Glen Scotia distillery is located in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre Peninsula on Scotland’s west coast. This small town was once a bustling hub of whisky production, earning it the title “Whisky Capital of the World” in the Victorian era, boasting over 30 distilleries at its peak. Today, only three distilleries remain: Springbank, Glengyle (Kilkerran), and Glen Scotia. It was founded in 1832 as “Scotia Distillery.” It’s one of the most historically resilient distilleries in Scotland, having weathered numerous closures, changes in ownership, and the dramatic decline of Campbeltown’s whisky industry. Like many distilleries in Campbeltown, Glen Scotia faced immense challenges, particularly with American Prohibition in the 1920s and the Great Depression, which decimated its export market. It closed for periods in 1928, 1942 (due to WWII), and 1984. However, it always managed to restart production, demonstrating its incredible perseverance. Since 2014, the distillery has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group, who have invested significantly in its revitalisation, modernising some aspects while retaining traditional methods and promoting the Glen Scotia brand globally. They’ve focused on consistency and showcasing the unique Campbeltown character.
Glen Scotia has seen a significant resurgence in recent years, winning numerous awards and gaining a loyal following for its distinctive Campbeltown character, making it a proud representative of this historically rich whisky region. This 10 year old expression is a core part of Glen Scotia’s revitalised range. It’s matured entirely in first-fill American oak ex-Bourbon casks and generally bottled at 46% alc/vol, though the Australian market will see it at 40% alc/vol. It is non-chill filtered and natural colour, aiming to present the whisky in its most authentic form.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Expect a refreshing and inviting aroma. Initial notes of fresh sea air and sea spray are often prominent, mingling with brighter hints of sliced green apples, zesty lemon peel, and juicy pineapple. There’s a comforting undertone of vanilla sweetness from the bourbon casks, along with a touch of toasted oak and sometimes a subtle malty or cereal sweetness.
Palate: The palate is generally smooth, almost creamy, with a medium body. It delivers a delightful interplay of sweetness and a gentle salinity. Flavours of melted brown sugar, vanilla cream, and honey emerge, followed by a burst of tropical fruits like pineapple and ripe apple. A subtle spiciness of ground ginger and cinnamon adds warmth, leading into the distinct maritime character – a clean, briny note that defines Campbeltown. Some tasters also find notes of orange marmalade or a hint of green fruit tartness.
Finish: The finish is typically long, warming, and satisfying. The maritime saltiness tends to linger, alongside a gentle spiciness of ginger and cinnamon. Sweet notes of vanilla and a hint of oak complete the experience, leaving a clean and fresh impression.
