Description
Lagavulin Aged 10 Years Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky – Travel Exclusive (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 43% Age: 10 Years Old Country: Scotland
Lagavulin in Gaelic means ‘the mill in the hollow’. This distillery was the first distillery on Isaly to start to operate legally after many years of illegal distilling on the isalnd. It was officially opened in 1816 by John Johnston who was a member of a local illegal distilling clan. The making of this whisky usually occurs slowly. The barley is smoked with peat longer than usual and the whisky is generally left to mature for 16 years before it’s ready to be bottled. The distillery is both old and modern and sits beside the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle near Port Ellen which was at one time home to the ‘Lord of the Isles’. This distillery is linked with its whisky being mellow, peaty, smoky and full bodied.
This bottling was specifically crafted for the travel retail market, offering a unique age statement and profile within Lagavulin’s peated lineup. Matured in a combination of rejuvenated American oak hogsheads and refill sherry butts. The rejuvenated casks add a particular vibrancy, while the refill sherry butts contribute subtle fruit and spice without overpowering Lagavulin’s signature smoke. Bottled at a robust 43% alc/vol, a strength that balances intensity with approachability for a broader audience. Chill-filtered and may have added colouring (E150a) for consistency, as is common with many larger core range official bottlings. As a “Travel Exclusive,” it was primarily available in duty-free stores in airports, making it a distinctive find outside of that channel.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Expect a burst of intense, sweet, and salty smoke, characteristic of Lagavulin. This is layered with briny seaweed, a hint of medicinal iodine, and bright notes of fresh citrus (lemon peel, green apple), alongside a gentle sweetness of vanilla and toasted oak.
Palate: Medium-bodied and wonderfully balanced. The powerful peat smoke is upfront, quickly followed by a surprising burst of sweetness and a zingy, vibrant fruitiness (pineapple, apple, or a subtle tropical note). Notes of caramel, warming spices (black pepper, chilli flakes), and a distinct maritime saltiness emerge, creating a complex and engaging experience.
Finish: Long, warming, and smoky. The signature Lagavulin peat lingers prominently, accompanied by a pleasant sweetness, sea salt, and a dry, spicy oak character.
