Laphroaig PX Cask Triple Matured Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 1000ml ABV: 48% Age: No Age Statement Country: Scotland
Laphroaig PX Cask Triple Matured is a distinctive and intense bottling that showcases Laphroaig’s commitment to exploring the effects of various cask types. The “triple matured” process is key to its complex flavour profile. A No Age Statement (NAS). The focus is on the unique maturation sequence and the resulting flavour, rather than a specific age. It carries Laphroaig’s characteristic heavy peat, which is then intricately woven with the robust sweetness. Bottled at a strong 48% alc/vol, a preferred strength for many Laphroaig enthusiasts, allowing its complex flavours to shine without dilution. It is non-chill filtered and typically has natural colour, ensuring maximum flavour retention and authenticity.
This whisky undergoes a unique three-stage maturation process:
-
- First Maturation: Matured initially in ex-Bourbon barrels. This provides the classic Laphroaig base with notes of vanilla and gentle oak.
- Second Maturation: Transferred to Quarter Casks. These smaller casks (about 1/4 the size of a standard barrel) increase the wood-to-spirit contact, accelerating maturation and intensifying vanilla, spice, and creaminess.
- Third Maturation/Finish: Finally, it’s transferred to Pedro Ximénez (PX) Sherry Casks. PX is an intensely sweet, dark sherry that imparts rich notes of dried fruits, molasses, chocolate, and syrupy sweetness, profoundly influencing the whisky’s character.
Our Tasting Notes
Laphroaig PX Cask is known for its bold and dramatic interplay of medicinal peat smoke with deep, luscious sherry sweetness.
Nose: Rich and complex, with an immediate powerful burst of Laphroaig’s medicinal peat smoke (iodine, creosote), wonderfully balanced by intense aromas of sweet, dark dried fruits (raisins, dates, figs), and a hint of treacle or dark chocolate. Notes of vanilla, toasted nuts, and sea salt also emerge.
Palate: Full-bodied, oily, and syrupy, coating the mouth. The bold, earthy peat and maritime notes are beautifully integrated with a profound sweetness from the PX sherry. Flavours of sticky toffee pudding, rich fruitcake, and dark berries are prominent, complemented by warming spices (cinnamon, black pepper) and a lingering notes of coffee or liquorice. The Quarter Cask influence adds a creamy texture and vanilla depth.
Finish: Long, warming, and incredibly satisfying. The smoky peat and sweet dark fruit notes linger, with hints of cocoa, dried spices, and a delicate salinity. It’s a powerful yet harmonious dram.
This whisky is a superb example of how careful cask management can transform a peated spirit into a multi-layered, indulgent experience, appealing to both peat lovers and sherry enthusiasts.
