Our Tasting Notes
This whisky offers a complex and rewarding profile, marrying rich sherry and bourbon influences with the inherent elegance of a well-aged grain spirit.
Nose: Expect rich aromas of dark dried fruits, caramelised sugar, and toasted vanilla. Hints of raisins and figs from the Oloroso sherry casks are prominent, alongside a touch of roasted almonds and subtle cinnamon. It often presents a pleasant, bourbon-esque character with vanilla and honey.
Palate: Creamy and full-bodied, with layers of butterscotch, toffee, and milk chocolate. The sherry influence shines through with notes of candied orange and dark cherries, while bourbon-driven toffee and honey provide balance. A subtle hint of spices like nutmeg and clove adds complexity.
Finish: Long and warming, with lingering notes of oak, mocha, and dried fruit. The combination of sweetness and spice lingers harmoniously, making every sip a pleasure. A very mild and pleasant metallic/mineral grain note might appear, confirming its grain identity.
This whisky is an excellent example of a well-aged single grain, demonstrating that these whiskies can be both fun and interesting, particularly when from a quality independent bottler.
North British Distillery is located in the Gorgie area of Edinburgh, Scotland, in the Lowland region. Established in 1885 by a consortium of independent blenders (including Andrew Usher and William Sanderson) who sought to challenge the monopoly on grain whisky held by Distillers Company Ltd. (DCL), it quickly became a major industrial powerhouse. It holds a significant place in Scotch whisky history as one of Scotland’s largest and oldest grain distilleries. Production commenced in 1887, and its output has largely been destined for some of the world’s best-known blended Scotch whiskies, including Johnnie Walker, J&B Rare, The Famous Grouse, and Cutty Sark. Today, North British is owned as a joint venture between Diageo and The Edrington Group.
Signatory Vintage, founded in 1988 by brothers Andrew and Brian Symington, stands as one of Scotland’s most respected and prominent independent bottlers. Their philosophy is rooted in offering whisky enthusiasts a broad and diverse range of unique expressions, often sourcing casks from distilleries whose whiskies are not commonly seen as official single malts.
