Old Pulteney Aged 16 Years Travel Exclusive Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 43% Age: 16 Years Old Country: Scotland
Founded in 1826 by James Henderson at the height of Wick’s celebrated herring boom, the Pulteney Distillery is one of the most northerly on the British mainland. At a time when road links to the town were yet to be established, the distillery was dependent on the sea for its supply of barley and for the shipping out of its malt whisky. Wick became known for the barrels of silver (herring) and gold (whisky) which left the port in vast numbers. The distillery itself has an absorbing history, with its unique stills defying convention to this day. The wash still, in particular, is a source of fascination to visitors due to the absence of a ‘swan neck’. Legend has it that when the still was delivered it was too tall for the still house and the manager simply decided to cut the top off! The Old Pulteney bottle now incorporates a bulbous neck to reflect the shape of the stills.
With its 21 years old single malt was given a magical gift being named by Jim Murray as the ‘Whisky of the Century’ this is a range of whisky you must discover and try to prise yourself away from.
This bottling was specifically created for the global travel retail market, offering a unique age statement and profile compared to their core range. It is matured in a combination of carefully selected ex-Bourbon barrels and refill sherry casks. This balance allows Old Pulteney’s distinct maritime spirit to shine through, with the Bourbon casks contributing vanilla and honey notes, and the refill sherry casks adding subtle dried fruit and spice. Bottled at 43% alc/vol. As a “Traveller’s Exclusive,” it was primarily available in duty-free stores in airports and international travel hubs, making it a distinctive find outside of that channel.
Our Tasting Notes
The Old Pulteney 16 Year Old Traveller’s Exclusive promises a harmonious blend of maritime crispness, refined sweetness, and subtle complexity.
Nose: Expect a delightful interplay of briny sea air, subtle salt, and maritime freshness, beautifully intertwined with notes of honeyed sweetness, vanilla fudge, and ripe orchard fruits (apples, pears). Hints of toasted nuts and a delicate floral quality.
Palate: Medium-bodied and smooth, with a pleasing oiliness. Flavours of caramel, crème brûlée, and sweet malt emerge, balanced by a gentle saltiness and a touch of peppery spice. Notes of dried apricot, citrus zest, and a subtle oak influence contribute to its refined complexity.
